Many animals will hold a grudge. A simple pigeon will never forgive you if you are mean to it and will remember for years. Lions have tracked down (and killed) poachers that killed their mate.

Harley Saint James was an accomplished race car driver back in the 60's, he and his wife raised and housed the chimpanzee, who they named Moe, in their home for 30 years, they we're forced to place the chimp into a sanctuary in 1999 due to a new California ordinance on exotic pet ownership. In 2005, on one of the chimp's birthdays, both St James and his wife visited Moe at the sanctuary, and in a tradition they began since Moe's first birthday at the sanctuary, brought him a birthday cake, unbeknownst to St. James was the fact that a short time earlier 2 other chimpanzees had escaped from their enclosures and were running free inside the sanctuary, when the chimpanzees spotted the couple, they charged, (chimps are extremely territorial) and initially set their sights on St James wife, St James intervened, pushing his wife under a picnic table, and putting himself in between his wife and the raging chimpanzees, where at that point the 2 chimpanzees carried out a vicious attack, mauling, dismembering, and disfiguring St. James until a sanctuary staff member arrived with a rifle and shot the attackers. Surprisingly, St. James, survived the gruesome attack, and even more surprisingly, understanding chimpanzee behavior, held no grudges or ill will towards the species. Both St James and his wife continued to visit Moe on his birthday. Eventually Moe was moved to another sanctuary, and a year after Moe was transferred to the new facility, Moe, himself escaped his enclosure, and to this day, remains missing in the northern hills of California.

A chimp named Mo Lived with a guy in west Covina Ca. The chimp bit sombody and was taken away from his family since childhood. I used to drive by their house every day. Mo was sent to some kind of chimp zoo. His Dad (Saint James,as he was known) went to visit moe at the chimp compound on Moe's B day. The other chimps attacked him. Those mean chimps went for his face, fingers and his junk. I saw Moe's dad, St. James at California speedway all effed up in a wheel chair. He was effed up with a plastic nose on his face. God bless him if he is still around.

I think you may be on to something with captivity anger. With Travis the chimp, his anger issues began soon after he was barred from being outside. Chimps in good places, like the cognitive research facilities in japan seem to have no aggression issues. Maybe this can be applied to humans to some degree. We get more frustrated the more we stay inside

I love his extreme overrating of a chimp's strength. They're lb for lb 1.5 times stronger approximately than humans at PULLING. Meaning a 100lb chimp will have the pulling strength of a 150lb man. They're not gorillas lol. They're really strong at pulling since they live their lives crawling around in trees, being natural climbers to stay away from danger. But they can't throw a punch. They can bite and rip. Just front kick a chimp in the head. A gorilla is a different story. Those fuckers will rip people apart like paper.

its called domestication. in dogs that have been domesticated over thousands of years, their ears droop and become floppy. its the same thing with farm animals. they arent having to be on high alert for prey or worry about being eaten by something so they relax. i think its the same thing with orcas in captivity. i mean, maybe it is.. i dont know for a fact or anything. it just kinda makes sense.

he isnt comparing like for like though is he? Chimps killing the guy just because he gave something to another chimp and not them is not the same as humans getting jealous over something another human has that they dont have. when humans are jealous , their animosity will be towards the person that has what they dont have but want. a proper comparison would be if one person bought another a drink in a bar but not them, in which case they might show some animosity towards the person who bought the drink as they may take it up as an insult.

"They're not dogs- but they're not human beings either..." True; and what are the other creatures that fit into that category, smarts-wise? Yep, dolphins! For years we've told ourselves that animals will kill for food, or instinctively over territorial or mating rights or to protect their young, etc; but "only humans attack out of simple malevolence". In the last few decades we've had to re-assess that somewhat complacent notion as footage has emerged of dolphins, those lovable clowns of the sea, brutally toss their much smaller porpoise cousins around like rag-dolls, breaking their spines and if they don't just succumb to their injuries, then they inevitably drown. Sadly, even those behemoths of the oceans, the Blue Whales, long thought invulnerable to all except perhaps bulk-carriers and pollution are now known not to be immune from this sort of predation. It had long been noted that as many as 1 in 4 were covered in scars, especially on their fins and flukes. People argued whether the cause was human- related, either inadvertently (shipping "fender-benders") or even advertently (hold-out whaling operations...) Slowly but surely the footage came out though, and, for orcas, it was damning. Also known as 'Killer Whales", the 'whale' part is something of a misnomer; while they are all cetaceans, it would be truer to say of Killer 'Whales' that they are closer to over-grown dolphins! The 'Killer' part though seems scarily correct! It has been found that pods of killer whales will 'harry' Blue Whales for many hours, biting chunks from their appendages and barging and 'elbow-dropping' them to try and prevent them from breathing. Most disturbingly there is now plenty of evidence of orcas hounding blue-whale mothers with their new-born calves, preventing the babies from getting to the surface, with the inevitable result. The mother's labours have been all for naught... Of course Wolves will harrass does and their fawns over many, many miles in much the same way. Even primitive humans that live in the bush do it. However, as tough as it is, when we, or the wolf does it, it's a meal, and possibly the difference between life and death. I don't think anyone is aware though of orcas preying on blue whales for food! I am absolutely no kind of marine biologist by the way, but I shouldn't think this sinister 'hunting for kicks' behaviour is universally present in killer whales, since in the case of their hunting for their food, the different global populations seem to employ quite different methods in the pursuit of different items on the menu - from the highly co-ordinated choreographing of enormous captive shoals of herring - to the carnage on the ice-floes/beaches approach of those orca that favour mammalian flesh to fish. As for the dolphins beating up on the porpoises, I suppose it's not entirely implausible that dolphins might see the porpoises as competition for food- but it DOES seem a stretch. As horrifying as it seems, could it simply be that cruelty is a function of intelligence? We tell ourselves that violence is the first resort of the brute and diplomacy is the first resort of the civilized... But for all the horror inherent in the behaviour of chimps and the larger cetaceans, it's notable that WE, not THEY, are the ones who've invented waterboarding and nuclear weapons (and yes, I do see the holes in that argument but I'm being a bit rhetorical...) Sad as it is, is a willingness to get ones tooth and claw a little red, at least time to time, a necessary part of getting to the top..? I mean, ok, I don't think anybody suspects Komodo dragons of being big contenders in the brains stakes- but at the same time I think one can rule out the idea of giraffes plotting global takeover as they browse amongst the high branches!
